Wiesenthal Centre Urges Booking.com to Delist Uruguayan Resort Hotel for Discrimination

Buenos Aires, 12 January 2018

Despite a confirmed reservation through Booking.com, the owner of Hostel Buena Vista, located in Valizas, Rocha, Uruguay, refused two tourists when he discovered that they were Israelis traveling through Latin America.

He berated them on "the policies of your country”, adding, “you are not welcome in my house."

The owner, Marcelo Piñero, had posted on Facebook that he would reject especially “young Israelis who served in the army as one such guest had, years ago, told him he was trained to kill in 15 seconds.” Pinero is convinced that his behaviour is “not discriminatory nor antisemitic”.

"The condemnation of a whole group for the politics of one of its members is the very definition of discrimination," said Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representative of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Latin America.

Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations for the Center stated: "As in another recent case in Switzerland, we will request Booking.com to delist this establishment which violates the anti-discrimatory principles of the reservation company...we will also inform our own global membership of over 400,000 to blacklist this hostel as inappropriate if visiting Uruguay.“

The Centre appreciates the declaration by the Uruguay Minister of Tourism, Liliana Kechichian, condemning the owner’s attitude and awaits her report and the measures she will take against this hostel of hate.

El Centro Wiesenthal insta a Booking.com a que retire de su plataforma hostel uruguayo por discriminación

A pesar de existir una reserva confirmada a través de Booking.com, el propietario del albergue Buena Vista, ubicado en Valizas, Rocha, Uruguay, rechazó a dos turistas cuando descubrió que eran israelíes que viajaban por América Latina. Los reprendió por "las políticas de su país" y agregó: "no son bienvenidos en mi casa".

El propietario, Marcelo Piñero, había publicado en Facebook que rechazaría especialmente a los jóvenes israelíes que sirvieron en el ejército como uno de esos huéspedes, hace años, le dijo que “estaba entrenado para matar en 15 segundos". Piñero está convencido de que su comportamiento "no es discriminatorio ni antisemita"

"La condena a todo un grupo por la opinión de uno de sus miembros es la definición misma de discriminación", dijo el Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro Simon Wiesenthal para América Latina.

El Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro declaró: "Como en otro caso reciente en Suiza, solicitaremos a Booking.com que retire este establecimiento que viola los principios antidiscriminatorios de la plataforma de reservas ... también informaremos a los 400.000 miembros de nuestra institución a través del mundo que excluyan este albergue por inapropiado, si se visita Uruguay".

El Centro valora la declaración de la Ministra de Turismo de Uruguay, Liliana Kechichian, que condena la actitud del propietario y espera el informe sobre las medidas que tomará contra este albergue de odio
