Wiesenthal Center Applauds Decision to Remove Police Chief Accused of Anti-Semitism

The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed satisfaction at the decision by the government of the Province of Santa Fe (Argentina) to remove the recently appointed regional Chief of Police, Juan Pablo Garro, accused of anti-Semitism and displaying a Nazi swastika on his desk in 2006.

Garro’s appointment had raised protests from local human rights organizations, and the Provincial government decided to remove him from office.

“The idea of a Police Chief with that background in the very same province where Jewish immigrants established the first Baron Hirsch sponsored settlement in Argentina, Moises Ville – a model of coexistence and respect for diversity – is totally unacceptable,”, noted Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

“We appreciate that the government of Santa Fe echoed the protests regarding Garro’s file. He should never have been appointed; but it is important that the voice of the civil society was taken into consideration,” added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

El Centro Wiesenthal manifiesta su satisfacción por la remoción de un jefe policial acusado de antisemitismo

Buenos Aires, 7 de enero de 2015

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal expresó su beneplácito por la decisión del gobierno de la provincia de Santa Fe de desplazar al recientemente designado jefe de la policía provincial, Juan Pablo Garro, debido a que en 2006 se lo había vinculado con acciones antisemitas y por haber tenido en su despacho una cruz esvástica.

El nombramiento de Garro había provocado protestas por parte de organizaciones locales de derechos humanos, y el gobierno de Santa Fe decidió su desplazamiento.

“Pensar que pudiera haber un jefe policial con tales antecedentes en la misma provincia en la que inmigrantes judíos establecieron el primer asentamiento patrocinado por el Baron Hirsch en Argentina, Moises Ville - un modelo de convivencia y respeto por la diversidad – es totalmente inaceptable”, destacó el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.

“Valoramos que el gobierno de Santa Fe se hiciera eco de las protestas en relación con los antecedentes de Garro. Nunca debería haber sido designado; pero es importante que se haya tomado en cuenta la voz de la sociedad civil y se lo removiera”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
