Barcelona Marks Holocaust Day by Breaking Ties with Tel Aviv :: También Lee En Español

Paris - In an open letter supporting Isaac Benzaquen Pinto, a Spanish Jewish Community leader, Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, demanded Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau to withdraw from a hateful campaign calling to break the "twinning" between the Catalonian capital and Tel Aviv.
 
Barcelona has a Friendship and Cooperation Agreement with Tel Aviv since 1998. Both cities are characterized as open and diverse societies, active in promoting art, culture, high-tech start-ups and tourism. Both are known worldwide as defenders of LGBT and minority rights.
 
Reportedly, a petition campaign under the spurious slogan “Barcelona with no Apartheid - NO”, has been signed by a number needed of haters of Israel and the Jews to call for a City Council vote.
 
That petition is in line with the international BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) campaign specifically targeting Israel, and contravenes the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) Definition of Antisemitism, adopted by the EU, its member-States - including Spain -, other countries worldwide, international institutions, football clubs and municipalities.
 
On several occasions, the Wiesenthal Centre has urged Spanish cities and sport clubs to adopt the IHRA Definition, as a tool to identify antisemitism.
 
If Barcelona were to break its twinning with Tel Aviv, this would mark it as a city prone to hateful political manipulation... Indeed, after Tel Aviv and the Jews, who’s next?
 
The City Council will meet on 27 January - International Holocaust Commemoration Day - to vote in support of this foul action.
 
Our mentor, Simon Wiesenthal, was liberated by the Allies from the Mauthausen concentration camp, together with a number of other surviving inmates, among which his closest friends were Spanish Republicans and Roma. They stayed in contact throughout their post-War lives, supporting each other's causes against discrimination.
 
“Simon would be aghast at the defacing of the Memory of the Holocaust and the pain inflicted on the Jewish community of Catalonia and of Spain,” concluded Samuels.

Barcelona conmemora el Día del Holocausto rompiendo lazos con Tel Aviv

En una carta abierta de apoyo a Isaac Benzaquen Pinto, líder de la comunidad judía española, el Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal, Dr. Shimon Samuels, exigió a la Alcaldesa de Barcelona, Ada Colau, que se retirara de una campaña de incitación al odio que pedía romper el hermanamiento entre la capital catalana y Tel Aviv.
 
Barcelona tiene un Acuerdo de Amistad y Cooperación con Tel Aviv desde 1998.  Ambas ciudades se caracterizan por ser sociedades abiertas y diversas, activas en la promoción del arte, la cultura, las start-ups de alta tecnología y el turismo. Ambas son mundialmente conocidas como defensoras de los derechos LGBT y de las minorías.
 
Según se informa, una campaña de petición bajo el lema espurio de  "Barcelona sin Apartheid - NO",  ha sido firmada por un número suficiente de enemigos de Israel y de los judíos como para para llamar a  una votación en el Ayuntamiento.
 
Esa petición está en línea con la campaña internacional del movimiento BDS (Boicot, Desinversión, Sanciones), dirigida específicamente contra Israel, y contraviene la Definición de Antisemitismo de la IHRA (Alianza Internacional para el Recuerdo del Holocausto), adoptada no sólo por la Unión Europea - UE,  sus Estados miembros  (incluido España), sino también por otros países de todo el mundo, instituciones internacionales, clubes de fútbol y municipios...
 
En varias ocasiones, el Centro Wiesenthal ha instado a las ciudades y clubes deportivos españoles a adoptar la Definición de la  IHRA, como herramienta para identificar el antisemitismo.
 
Si Barcelona rompiera su hermanamiento con Tel Aviv, esto la señalaría como una ciudad propensa a una odiosa manipulación política... De hecho, después de Tel Aviv y los judíos, ¿quién sigue?

El Ayuntamiento se reunirá el 27 de enero -Día Internacional de Conmemoración del Holocausto- para votar a favor de esta sucia acción.

Nuestro mentor, Simon Wiesenthal, fue liberado del campo de concentración de Mauthausen por los Aliados, junto a otros presos sobrevivientes entre quienes se encontraban sus amigos más cercanos que eran republicanos españoles y romaníes.  Se mantuvieron en contacto apoyándose mutuamente en las respectivas causas contra la discriminación a lo largo de sus vidas de posguerra.
 
“Simon estaría horrorizado por semejante vandalización a la Memoria del Holocausto y por el dolor infligido a la comunidad judía de Cataluña y de toda España”, concluyó Samuels.
