Wiesenthal Center Welcomes Opening of Trial of a Lithuanian Nazi Collaborator

The Simon Wiesenthal Center welcomed the opening in Vilnius today of the trial of suspected Nazi war criminal Algimantas Dailide and called upon the local authorities to expedite the trial of the former Lithuanian security policeman.

In Jerusalem, the Center’s chief Nazi-hunter, Israel director Dr. Efraim Zuroff, expressed satisfaction that the Dailide trial had commenced but expressed concern that in the past the cases of Lithuanian Nazi collaborators had been handled in such a way that defendants were spared punishment even though it was absolutely clear that they were guilty of extremely serious crimes.

“We very much hope that the delay of justice and absence of punishment which characterized the cases of Dailide’s superiors in the Saugumas (Lithuanian Security Police) Alexandras Lileikis and Kazys Gimzauskas will not recur in this case as well,” said Zuroff.
