Wiesenthal Center Urges Spanish Government to Launch Comprehensive Investigation of Entry and Current Residence of Nazi War Criminals

Jerusalem – The Simon Wiesenthal Center today revealed that it has officially asked the Spanish government to launch a comprehensive investigation of the entry and current residence in Spain of individuals who committed genocide and/or crimes against humanity during World War II.

In a letter sent last week to Spanish ambassador to Israel Eudaldo Mirapeix, in the wake of the discovery in Spain of the most decorated Norwegian SS-veteran Fredrik Jensen, the Center’s chief Nazi-hunter Israel director Dr. Efraim Zuroff called upon the Spanish authorities to finally address this issue by undertaking a thorough inquiry that would reveal the scope of the problem and identify any Holocaust perpetrators who can still be prosecuted for their crimes.

According to Zuroff:

“Under the current circumstances, with time rapidly running out on the efforts to bring Holocaust perpetrators to justice, I believe that it would be particularly important for the Spanish government to finally launch a comprehensive investigation of this issue. Such an undertaking would not only help identify individuals currently residing in Spain who might still be accountable for their crimes, but would also send powerful message that your country will no longer serve as a haven for Holocaust perpetrators. Needless to say, the Wiesenthal Center stands ready to assist the government in carrying out such an investigation.”
