Wiesenthal Center Urges Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry to Erase Antisemitic Graffiti at the Ministry

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has written to Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Fánder Falconi, urging him to order the clean up of antisemitic graffiti which deface the outside wall of the Ministry for the last two weeks. The graffiti read: “Israeli Embassy out of the Country”; “Genocidal Israel” with a Swastika; and “Star of David = Swastika”.

“Despite the time elapsed since the graffiti were painted, we believe that the security monitoring system of your Ministry should have a record of the perpetrators; and thus, we request you to launch an immediate investigation of those responsible for this act of racism”, stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

“We join our voice to those who have already requested that the graffiti be removed. The fact that they remain untouched for so long on a Governmental building is an insult to Ecuadorian society and encourages further such acts”, added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

El Centro Wiesenthal exhorta a limpiar inscripciones antisemitas en la Cancillería ecuatoriana

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal envió una carta al Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Ecuador, Fánder Falconi, urgiéndolo a que ordene limpiar inscripciones injuriosas antisemitas que desde hace dos semanas pueden verse en las paredes exteriores de la Cancillería de ese país. En dichas inscripciones se lee: “Fuera Embajada de Israel”; “Israel Genocida” junto a una cruz esvástica; y “Estrella de David = Esvástica”.

“Pese al tiempo transcurrido, estimamos que el sistema de seguridad de su Ministerio debe contar con un registro de la vigilancia regular, y por ello solicitamos a Ud. que ordene una investigación para determinar quién ha sido responsable de esta manifestación racista”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal.

“Sumamos nuestra voz a quienes ya han solicitado que se limpien esas inscripciones; su permanencia en una dependencia gubernamental resulta insultante para la sociedad ecuatoriana democrática y estimula que esos actos se reiteren”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
