Wiesenthal Center Urges Continuation of Investigation Against Constanza Mayor for Wearing Nazi Uniform; Calls His Apology “Inadequate” Jerusalem – The Simon Wiesenthal Center today expressed full support for the continuation of the investigation by Romanian officials of Constanza mayor Radu Mazare in the wake of his recent appearance at a local fashion show dressed in a Nazi army uniform. In a statement issued in Jerusalem by its chief Nazi-hunter, Israel director Dr. Efraim Zuroff, the Center called Mazare’s apology “inadequate” and joined MCA - the Center for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism in Romania in supporting a full investigation by the authorities into what is clearly a violation of Romanian law.
According to Zuroff:
“In Mazare’s letter of apology there was no clear understanding of the depth of the insult his appearance in a Nazi army uniform caused. Nor did he indicate his willingness, as we suggested, to launch an educational campaign on Nazi Holocaust crimes which would serve as an antidote to his unfortunate decision to parade together with his young son in Wehrmacht uniforms. Under these circumstances, the importance of a serious investigation by the Romanian authorities cannot be underestimated.”
