WIESENTHAL CENTER STATEMENT ON CALIFORNIA STATE IRAN DIVESTMENT PLAN

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today welcomed the signing by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of a California Assembly Bill that would divest funds from state pension plans from companies that do business with Iran.

“This is a body blow at the heart of Iranian-sponsored terrorism and clearly shows that America is prepared to enlist the full might of its economic resources in the fight against terrorism,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, Founder and Dean of the Wiesenthal Center. “I applaud Governor Schwarzenegger’s decisive leadership, taken together with the California legislature, in signing Resolution AB221 into law. The potential ripple effect of this action by the world’s sixth largest economy sends a decisive message to President Ahmadinejad and Iran’s Mullahs that the consequences of its policies will cost them much more than a few tough questions at public forums and criticism by world leaders. We call on other states to do what California has done,” Hier concluded.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at international agencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, and the Council of Europe.
