SWC Joins International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Plenary in Glasgow, Scotland

June 27, 2024

Dr. Ariel Gelblung, SWC Latin American Director is currently participating as part of the Argentine Delegation in the first plenary of the UK presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) being held in Glasgow, Scotland.

The motto of this year’s meeting is “In Plain Sight” in recognition of the highly visible and public nature of both Nazi and now Hamas’ anti-Semitism, and the general lack of public reaction to both.

The current meeting brings together representatives from 35 member countries and experts. Speaking of his work both for the Simon Wiesenthal Center and as a representative to the IHRA meeting, Dr. Gelblung said: “Since October 7th, there has been an exponential growth in anti-Semitism. This involves the shrinking of spaces for an open Jewish life, the theft and distortion of Holocaust narratives, the glorification of terrorism, and the call for the death of Jews during protests at universities and in other public spaces.”

In order to combat anti-Semitism, IHRA created a toolkit that countries and organizations can use to effectively fight Holocaust distortion.

The conference officially acknowledged that the IHRA definition has been adopted by 5 states within Brazil.  During the current plenary, Argentina announced that it will soon present its candidacy for the IHRA 2026 Presidency.

Topics currently being discussed in Glasgow include a presentation for the Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Antisemitism as well as good practices to address anti-Semitism in education post-October 7th.
